Sometimes, we have fond memories of games from our past. I can tell you the first game I played on Playstation (Final Fantasy VII), Nintendo 64 (Wave Race 64) and plenty of other firsts, including the Game Boy.

To be fair, I can’t remember exactly which game I played first, but I remember the first three games I owned- Super Mario Land, Tetris, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan. It wasn’t the first game to star the Turtles, and it certainly wasn’t the last, but it held some fond memories for me. One bored night, I decided to sit down and play the game again to see if my memories would bring any warm nostalgic feelings up.

The journey did not go as expected.

A Fiendishly Good Time – Game Boy Color – Revelations: The Demon Slayer – 1999

I have come to love and appreciate the games made by Atlus.  As I mentioned previously, I never used to pay much attention to who made games.  I was introduced to Atlus’ games, and realized I had played through a few of them over the years, including an odd title I’d picked up in my local videogame shop known as Revelations: The Demon Slayer.  Known originally in Japan as Megami Tensai Gaiden: Last Bible, this game may have had one or two biblical references in it to differentiate it from other Dragon Warrior-esque JRPG’s of the day.

Back on the Right Track – Nintendo Gameboy – Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins – 1992

If I admit something here, I hope no one holds it against me: I reviewed Super Mario Land mostly so I could get to its sequel and review it. That might be harsh, but my memories of Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins is much more pleasant and vivid than that of the original. Sometimes, though, heroes don’t always stand up to the test of time, as we’ve seen with a few other games of old in posts past. What does that say for this little gem?

Small Game, Small Step Back – Nintendo Gameboy – Super Mario Land – 1989

SUPER MARIO LAND

When you were younger and video games had just found their way into the mainstream, there were a few problems. Now, we’re not talking prices. We’re not talking about trying to find the entrance to the dungeon under the lake or other nonsense. We’re talking about the upset when you had to go to school or church or wherever your parents/significant other wanted you to go and you had to leave your game system behind. Then, the Game Boy came into our lives and added a whole new level of geekdom to our lives. A mobile and portable geekdom. Of the launch titles for this little piece of heaven, Super Mario Land is the first that many remember, despite its slight deviations from the classic Mario conventions. Where does this fall on the scale of Mario games, let along in the line of general retrospect? Let’s discuss, shall we?

When I look back on games that I’ve played throughout the years, one thing that is sorely lacking, oftentimes, is a female protagonist (something which actually made my younger sister considerably less interested in videogames, I discovered recently).  Hearing this, I decided to set out to find a good game with a female protagonist, preferably one I hadn’t played through, to review.  This cut out two retro games that had immediately come to mind, the original Phantasy Star, and the Metroid series.  I’d played through Tomb Raider, which was my next thought.  At the suggestion of The3rdPlayer, I decided to check out Shantae – an Arabian Nights themed platformer, involving a Bedlah babe half-genie who goes around whipping badguys with her hair.
